Rules for obtaining a visa to Iran.
It is possible to issue an Iranian visa directly at the Tehran airport upon arrival. To do this, you need to go through a check before departure and get a reference code. With a positive decision, you can safely take a ticket, since the check from the Iranian Foreign Ministry has already been passed and only a formality remains – to go through the registration procedure in the “VISA” window of the transit zone of the airport terminal.
It is impossible to get a visa to Iran WITHOUT an invitation with a reference code upon arrival at Tehran airport.
Also, on the basis of this invitation, you can get a visa to Iran through the Embassy, in this case, no registration is provided in the transit zone.

What is a reference code? How to get it?
To obtain both tourist, business and other types of visas, the so-called “reference code” from the Iranian Foreign Ministry is required. That is, every person traveling to Iran needs an inviting party. When requesting a tourist visa, it is an officially registered Iranian travel company that submits an application to the Iranian Foreign Ministry. Based on this application, a reference code is issued for a specific person.
When applying for a business visa, the partner company itself applies to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and receives a reference code in the same way. It is important to remember that not every Iranian company has the right to apply to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with such a request (the company must first go through a certain verification procedure).
Individuals also have the opportunity to independently and free of charge fill out a questionnaire on the website of the Iranian Foreign Ministry. But there, the questionnaires are processed by robots, which often issue refusals or offer to “contact a travel agency”.
The reference code is an electronic document in English in PDF format with a photo and a qar code, which is sent directly to the tourist or travel agency through which he submits information.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry accepts documents for an invitation no earlier than 3 months before the trip.
Usually, an invitation with a reference code for a tourist and business visa to Iran is issued in about 5-7 business days (Friday is a day off). But depending on the citizenship of the applicant and the workload of the migration service, it can be extended up to 20 days. Therefore, it is advisable to submit documents for obtaining a reference code at least 2-3 weeks before the planned trip.
The corridor of validity of an invitation for a visa to Iran (reference number from the Iranian Foreign Ministry) is up to 90 days from the date of its issuance. Required documents to obtain a reference code. – a clear scan of the first page of the foreign passport (valid for at least 6 months at the time of entry into Iran); – scan of a color photograph on a white background 35 x 45 mm without an oval, close-up of the face; – hotel reservation for the entire period of stay;
