Yellowstone National Park
Yellowstone National Park [ jelə ʊ stə ʊ n næ ʃ nl p ɑ ː k], the oldest national park in the United States, in northwestern Wyoming (Body), Montana and Idaho, 8980 km 2, set up in 1872; Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Located in the Rocky Mountains, Yellowstone National Park comprises a plateau (2,000–2,500 m above sea level) surrounded by high mountains (Eagle Peak 3,462 m above sea level) and consisting of basaltic effusions; geologically it is a huge caldera. The Yellowstone River has cut into the plateau below two waterfalls (Upper Fall, 33 m high, Lower Fall, 94 m high) in a 24 km long and over 300 m deep gorge (Grand Canyon). Yellowstone Lake, through which the Yellowstone River flows, is located above the Grand Canyon (2,356 m above sea level, 360 km 2, up to 91 m deep). Yellowstone National Park is known for its geysers (over 300) and hot springs (after-effects of volcanic activities), and sintered terraces also occur. The most famous geyser is the Old Faithful, from which a jet of water rises to a height of over 30 m (maximum 60 m) at intervals of almost 90 minutes on average. The Yellowstone National Park, which consists mainly of coniferous forests (around 80% forested), is a wildlife sanctuary in which, among other things, Bison, elk and bears as well as over 300 different bird species live here. – The Grand Teton National Park borders the Y. NP in the south.
