Flint
In the American state of Michigan, the city of the same name has developed along the Flint River, which with its 130,000 inhabitants is the fifth largest city in the country. This county seat of Genesee County is about 106 km northwest of Detroit. Flint is also the largest single-syllable city in the United States.
The city of Flint was founded by European immigrants in 1871. Flint is known as the birthplace of General Motors Corporation. The Flint Sit-Down Strike of 1936-1937 played an important role in the formation of the United Auto Workers union, which represented workers in the United States and Puerto Rico. After this strike, there was a drop in production in the automobile industry. In 1989, Flint native Michael Moore created a documentary called Roger & Me, which deals with the reality of the impact the closing of several local car manufacturing plants had on the city’s residents.
Flint is currently a city of culture and many museums and galleries. In 1950, the Flint Cultural Center was built here, which covers an area of 120,000 square meters. In 1928, an art institute was also founded in the city, which is now part of the cultural center. The city is also home to the Alfred P. Sloan Automobile Museum, the Buick Gallery, the Youth Theatre, the Symphony Orchestra, the Chamber Philharmonic, the Flint Institute of Arts, and the Flint Institute of Music. You can also visit the public library and the planetarium.
Warren
The city of Warren is located in Macomb County in the US state of Michigan. With its 140,000 inhabitants, it is the third largest city in this county and also the third most populous city in Michigan. Warren is home to a wide variety of businesses, including the General Motors Technical Center and the United States Army Detroit Arsenal.
As recently as 1950, Warren was just a tiny unincorporated village of one square mile. It was located at the intersection of Mound Road and Chicago Road. In 1940 there were 582 inhabitants, and ten years later 727 inhabitants. Warren was incorporated as a city in 1957, growing out of what was previously known as Warren Township. Between the years 1950 and 1950, Warren experienced a population explosion, the number of residents then rose to an incredible 89,426. This increase continued in the following decades until it stabilized at the current 140 thousand.
Today, Warren is a city of sports, culture and entertainment. A symphony orchestra works here, which presents several concerts during the season. In 2003, a brand new Community Center was built to house Warren High School. The complex has several gymnasiums, an auditorium, swimming pools, a fitness center and several conference rooms.
There are several interesting monuments worth seeing in Warren, such as Detroit Memorial Park Cemetery, John Theisen House, Warren Village, General Motors Technical Museum, Warren Union Cemetery or Detroit Arsenal Tank Plant.
