Colorado Springs
Colorado Springs is the second largest city in the US state of Colorado, it is the seat of the administration of the district of El Paso and at the same time its most populous city. Currently, there are about 400,000 inhabitants, which makes it the 47th most populous city in the United States.
The city covers an area of 482.1 km2 and grew at the foot of the famous mountain Pikes Peak, on the eastern edge of the southern Rocky Mountains. It was founded in 1871 by General William Palmer, near the town of Colorado City, which is now the historic district of Colorado Springs known as Old Colorado City. The original intention was to build an attractive resort with a high level of services in this place, which would attract tourists to the area. This goal began to be fulfilled by Palmer with an increasing number of English tourists, and soon the city even became nicknamed Little London.
In 1891, Winfield Scott Stratton discovered one of the richest gold mines in the country in the nearby town of Cripple Creek. Stratton became very rich and then became perhaps the most generous patron of the city of Colorado Springs. He contributed to the development of the city, financing the construction of many buildings, such as Myron Stratton Home – a home for abandoned children and retirees. Another such patron was Spencer Penrose, who built Broadmoor and Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, one of two mountain zoos in the United States. Right next to the garden is Will Rogers Shrine of the Sun, which is the last resting place of Spencer Penrose and his wife.
After the gold rush subsided, the wealth of the city began to decline, but still remained a popular tourist destination. Mostly patients with tuberculosis came here, but also other people who were attracted by the local mineral springs, the beautiful surrounding nature and the extremely dry climate. In 1942, the city offered its land to the army, which built a camp in the south of the city called Fort Carson, which served to prepare soldiers for World War II. After her, Fort Carson slowly began to decay. The local Peterson Field airport was used by the military until 1950. However, as soon as the Korean War broke out, the local military camp with about 600 soldiers was restored along with other parts of the city. After the Korean War, Peterson Field was renamed Peterson Air Force Base. The United States Air Force Academy was also built, thanks to which the city grew and gained notoriety.
The most important sectors of the city’s economy are the military, technology and tourism. The arms industry is of great importance, with one-fifth of all the city’s residents currently working for the military. Nevertheless, Colorado Springs is not directly dependent on the military. In the city itself, tourists are attracted mainly by beautiful parks, such as America the Beautiful Park and the Garden of the Gods, which is famous for its sandstone formations.
There are many attractive places around the city that are worth visiting. Most visitors head to Pikes Peak and the Cave of the Winds. There is also the highest railway in North America – the old Manitou and PikeĀ“s Peak Railway. The Seven Falls cascade is also beautiful, consisting of seven consecutive waterfalls. Colorado Springs hosts an annual hot air balloon competition.
