SIGHTSEEING IN VIRGINIA
Like every southern state, Virginia has a lot to offer in historical places. The Pentagon is also located here, as the Washington DC border is very close to Virginia.
Jamestown
Jamestown was founded in 1607 as James Fort in Virginia and went down in history as the first permanently settled colony on the soil of the United States. Visitors can still visit some of the remains of the old settlement today. The settlement owes its name to the English King James I.
Williamsburg
Williamsburg was founded in 1633 as part of Jamestown. 33 years later it replaced Jamestown as the seat of government. Williamsburg was also the headquarters of the British colony until 1788. Then this status was transferred to what is now the capital, Richmond. Today the city has around 12,000 residents and is known as a living museum with a listed monument.
The Library of Virginia
The Library of Virginia was founded in Richmond in 1823 and is reputed to be the oldest state libraries in the United States. Of particular interest are the Settlement History and Virginia Assembly collections. Their origins go back to the first settlers who archived documents, pictures and notes of all kinds. Today you can see readings, educational programs and exhibitions there. The Virginia State Capitol is just two blocks from the library and is the next attraction.
Mount Vernon
Mount Vernon is the former country residence of George Washington, the first President of the United States. He inherited the property in 1761 from a deceased aunt. Thanks to its large area, Mount Vernon is still one of the most beautiful and ostentatious houses in America. Mount Vernon is now a museum and serves as a memorial to the first president, who found his final resting place there alongside some family members.
Virginia Civil Rights Memorial
Established in 2008, the Virginia Civil Rights Memorial is located in Richmond. This is a memorial dedicated to the American civil rights movement. Located on the grounds of the Virginia State Capitol, it consists of 18 statues of civil rights activists and 2 significant quotes. It was also dedicated to the fight against segregation in classrooms.
Appomattox Court House
The village of Appomattox Court House was built in 1846. It was here on April 9, 1865, that General Robert E. Lee signed the West Virginia Army charter of surrender. This day is considered the official end of the American Civil War. Today there is an open-air museum and weapons that were used during the civil war on the site.
Pentagon
The Pentagon is right on the Washington DC border on the Potomac River in Arlington. The headquarters of the US Department of Defense has a total area of 135,000 m² and 50 hectares of park and lawn. It was built in 1941. A special feature of the building is that each point can be reached from another within seven minutes on foot.
VirginiaState Capitol
The Virginia State Capitol, built in 1788 in Richmond, is the seat of government of Virginia. The Virginia General Assembly, founded in 1619 and representing the oldest government in the United States, meets here. Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the USA, and Charles-Louis Clérisseau were involved in the construction of the State Capitol.
RichmondNationalBattlefieldPark
Established in 1995, Richmond National Battlefield Park is home to over 30 historic sites around the city of Richmond, including B. also the Shelton House, built in 1670. The oldest Civil War hospital is also located here.
JamestownChurch
Jamestown Church in Jamestown was built by European immigrants in 1639 and is now the oldest church in the United States. It is also one of a few buildings from this period that still partially exist today. In addition, the church is part of the Jamestown National Historic Site. This organization has set itself the goal of preserving the traces of the first English settlers, protecting them and making them accessible to the public.
Manassas NBP
On July 21, 1861, near the Virginia settlement of Manassas, the armies of two opposing sides of the American Civil War clashed in the first major battle. The Union Army was commanded by Brigadier General Irving McDowell. He was forced to attempt a decisive attack by impatient citizens and politicians in Washington, who eventually put pressure on President Lincoln as well. McDowell’s troops were composed of untrained recruits, slightly outnumbered, and their determination to attack could not match the Southerners’ determination to defend the capital, Richmond.
The place where the troops of Northerners and Southerners met many years ago is today a national monument. It is a memorial to the fallen soldiers who fought here on 21 July 1861 and also on 28-30 August 1862 for a better tomorrow. Thus, 2 major battles between the opposing Union and Confederate factions took place at this location. A stone house that served as a hospital during both battles can be seen, as well as a couple of cannons and a monument. The place breathes on visitors with its strange historical atmosphere. Visitors can view the historical terrain, the site of actual battles where hundreds of men fought and died for their beliefs. Around 700,000 people from all over the world visit this battlefield every year. The historical territory of the park has been registered in the National Register of Historic Places since 1966.
