Economy
The dominant branch of the economy is industry. The first machine cotton mill in the USA was built in Pawtucket in 1793. In addition to the textile industry, mechanical engineering, the electronics industry and the manufacture of jewelry and silver goods developed. Services are becoming increasingly important, especially in wholesale and retail trade, as well as in the financial sector and research. Agriculture is of little importance, it is geared towards supplying the cities (dairy farming, chicken farming, vegetable and fruit growing). Commercial fishing is declining but still important; rich fishing grounds in Narragansett Bay (shellfish and flounder). There are seaside resorts (tourism) on the coast.
History
Rhode Island, by Roger Williams et al. colonized by religious dissidents from Massachusetts since 1636 (founding of Providence), it was the first British colony to practice the strict separation of church and state. After freedom of religion was granted by charter of the British Parliament (1644, by Charles II.1663 confirmed), it became a refuge for persecuted religious minorities (Quakers, Baptists, Jews). Lively sea trade and smuggling (Newport), democratic opposition and disorderly monetary policy marked the development of Rhode Islands. On May 29, 1790, it was the last of the 13 founding states to ratify the US Federal Constitution. In 1843 the constitution of 1663 was replaced by a new one after considerable internal unrest (1840–42). It was not until 1928 that the last restrictions on voting rights were abolished.
