Ayr Mount
The “Ayr Mount” property is a federal style plantation home located to the east of Hillsborough. It was built by William Kirkland around 1815 and is now on the National Register of Historic Places. The house serves as a historical museum displaying antiques and decorative art, as well as original Kirkland furnishings. Visitors have the opportunity to go hiking on the “Poet’s Walk” or take part in a guided tour through the house museum.
Biltmore Estate
The magnificent Biltmore Estate is located in the mountains near the city of Asheville. The building of the chateau was commissioned by George Washington Vanderbilt II in 1889. The privately owned mansion was built in the Renaissance style and now also serves as a museum. The small castle with its 250 rooms is one of the most popular tourist attractions of the climatic health resort Asheville and has small shops, a luxurious 4-star hotel, wonderful gardens and an excellent winery. The “Biltmore Estate” was declared a National Historic Landmark and included on the National Register of Historic Places.
Brunswick Town
“Brunswick Town” also known as “Fort Anderson State Historic Site” is a colonial ghost town on the Cape Fear River and part of Smithville Township. Today’s ghost town was once the first settlement in the Cape Fear region and existed for about 50 years. Part of the “Brunswick Town Historic District” are the ruins of the houses from the 18th century, the ruins of “St. Philip’s Church”, the “Fort Anderson” and “Russelborough”, the former residence of the governor. In the visitor center, visitors can learn interesting information about the history of “Brunswick Town” and the importance of “Fort Anderson” in the Civil War. “Brunswick Town” and the “St. Philip’s Church”.
Cape Hatteras Light
The lighthouse “Cape Hatteras Light” is located on Hatteras Island, which is part of the Outer Banks island chain. “Cape Hatteras Light” was first built in 1803 and is part of the “Cape Hatteras National Seashore”. It is the tallest lighthouse in America and with its 61 m one of the largest in the world. The lighthouse keeper’s house now houses the Hatteras Island Visitor Center and Museum of the Sea. Exhibitions on the history, seafaring and natural history of the Outer Banks as well as the lighthouse are shown here. “Cape Hatteras Light Station” was named a Historic District and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
