New York
New York [nju ː j ɔ ː k], abbreviation N. Y., post officially NY, state in the northeastern United States, bordered by Canada, 122,272 km 2, (2015) 19.8 million residents (1960: 16,780,000, 1980: 17.56 million, 2000: 18.98 million residents). New York is divided into 62 counties, 5 of which form the city of New York. The capital is Albany.
Law and Politics

Geography
The landscapes are varied. The Adirondacks in the north (up to 1,629 m above sea level) are part of the Canadian Shield. Lowlands with glacial shapes can be found especially on Lake Ontario and Lake Erie. The Appalachian plateaus in the south reach 1,281 m above sea level (Catskill Mountains). The valleys of the Hudson River and the Mohawk River (Hudson-Mohawk furrow) are an important traffic route between the Atlantic and the Great Lakes. The climate is warm, temperate and humid. Ingress of cold air can cause temperatures to drop sharply; extreme values of −26 ° C were measured even in the New York metropolitan area. Almost half of the area is forest-covered.
Population
In 2014, the proportion of whites was 70.4%, that of blacks 17.6%, Asians 8.5% and others 3.5%. Largest cities are New York, Buffalo, Rochester, Yonkers, Syracuse and Albany.
