New Jersey
New Jersey [ nju ː d ʒ ə ː z ɪ ], abbreviation N. J., post officially NJ State in the Eastern US, 19,209 km 2, (2015) 8960000 residents (1960: 6,070,000, 1980: 7.36 million, 2000: 8.41 million residents). The capital is Trenton. New Jersey is divided into 21 counties.
Law and Politics
1947 Constitution (numerous amendments). There is a Senate with 40 and a General Assembly with 80 members. New Jersey is represented in Congress by 2 Senators and 12 MPs.
Geography
The state, between the Delaware River in the west and the Atlantic Ocean in the east, has a share of the Appalachian Mountains (up to 550 m above sea level), the hilly Piedmont Plateau and the coastal plain. In the northeast, the Hudson River separates New Jersey from New York. The original hardwood forest, which covered the national territory with the exception of the swamp and dune areas, has largely disappeared or has only been reforested as a secondary growth. Blueberry and lingonberry cultures are widespread in the scrubby coniferous and oak bush forests.
Population
The proportion of whites was 73.0% of the population in 2014, 14.8% were black, 9.4% Asian and 2.8% other. 19.3% of the population were Hispanic. With (2015) 466 residents per km 2 of land area, New Jersey is the most densely populated state in the USA. The largest cities of Newark, Jersey City, Paterson and Elizabeth are part of the metropolitan area of New York.
