Las Vegas – information about the city

Until two centuries ago, it was just an insignificant plain in the middle of the Mojave Desert, not even drawn on maps. Only after the Mexican merchant Antonio Armija and his 60-member expedition wandered into these places on his way to Los Angeles, a settlement began to emerge here. Today, the largest and best-known city of the American Nevada is located here, which is home to approximately 600,000 people and also the birthplace of gambling and vice.

In the middle of the Mojave Desert, the first settlers had to deal with a rather fundamental problem: the absence of water. After some time of searching, however, they luckily came across a spring of water and named the place Las Vegas, which means “wet plains or floodplains” in Spanish. The Mormons were the next to try to settle in the area, but they were eventually pushed out by the Indians. In 1905, a railroad was brought to the original settlement and the city of Las Vegas was officially founded.

Currently, Las Vegas covers an area of 182 square kilometers and is one of the liveliest and most famous entertainment centers in the entire United States of America. In the 1930s, gambling was declared legal here and this started a significant influx of funds for the whole of Nevada. The first hotels and casinos began to be built. Today, the city is famous for its casinos, rich nightlife and never-ending entertainment. Unfortunately, Las Vegas is also notorious for its high crime rate.

Those who want to try their luck can sit down to roulette, play dice, poker, blackjack or one of the other card games. If you don’t master any of them, or if you don’t want to think about the tactics of the game, there are slot machines for you, or take part in the much-loved bingo game. If you want to see something unusual, you have to go to the Four Queens Hotel, where you will find the largest gaming machine in the world. It is as big as a motorhome and thanks to its unique dimensions, it was even entered in the Guinness Book of Records.

Today, however, Las Vegas is a magnet not only for fans of gambling, but also tourists from all corners of the world who want to see all the lights, neon lights and strange buildings in full beauty head here in large numbers. The local architecture is very kitsch, there are copies of famous world buildings. You can “enjoy” the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Statue of Liberty in New York, the Egyptian pyramids in Luxor or Caesar’s Palace. Everything is complemented by brightly colored light bulbs, fluorescent lights and there are also neon advertisements of the largest possible dimensions. There is even the largest free-standing advertisement in the world. It is 110 meters high and has an area of 7 thousand square meters. It was built in 1993 at the Hilton+Casino hotel.

The center of the city is Las Vegas Boulevard. In the section called The Strip, which stretches for about 7 km, a huge number of hotel complexes have grown up, in which there are giant casinos. Everything here is megalomaniac, every hotel tries to be unmissable, so it’s no wonder that 18 of the world’s largest hotels are located in Las Vegas. In the 1950s, hotels and businesses with names such as Moulin Rouge, Stardust, Royal Nevada, Hacienda and Dunes were established.

Then in 1989, the luxurious Mirage Hotel was created, which offers 3,600 luxuriously appointed rooms, a casino and such attractions as a pool full of dolphins, a forest with a live tiger, an artificial waterfall and even a miniature volcano spewing fire and water. The second largest accommodation and entertainment complex is Treasure Island, which has 2,900 rooms and boasts an artificial lagoon with a pirate ship. Exciting battles regularly take place on it for the pleasure of the spectators. Tourists also like to visit concerts, musicals, travesti shows and various circus performances. In short, one is never bored in Las Vegas, because it is a place where artists from all over the world constantly come to seek fame. It is also very likely that you will meet a Hollywood star, famous singer or other celebrity on the streets of Las Vegas. A lot of people head to Las Vegas for another reason, than entertainment and gambling. Since it is not a problem to get married here in a relatively short time and without unnecessary paperwork, couples in love from all over the world come here. Every year in Las Vegas, he says his “yes” to 100,000 couples. Around 280 weddings take place on average every day in around 50 local chapels (the most famous is the Little White Chapel).
