Maine [me ɪ n], abbreviation Me., Post office ME, state in the northeast of the USA, on the border with Canada, with 79,924 km 2 the largest of the New England states, (2015) 1.33 million residents (1960: 696 300, 1980: 1.12 million, 2000: 1.27 million residents).
