Florida Parishes region of Louisiana
The Florida Parishes Region is located on the eastern side of Louisiana and is also known as the Northshore Region or Northlake Region. The name Florida Parishes comes from the fact that this region, which includes 8 parishes, was part of West Florida in the 18th and early 19th centuries. But the area is also known as Plantation Country. As the name suggests, there are numerous plantations in this region. Huge cotton and sugar cane plantations helped the plantation owners to enormous wealth and prosperity in the time before the American Civil War. The Laura Plantation, which is one of the last remaining plantations from the Creole era, is particularly worth seeing. The heart of the region is the capital of Louisiana, Baton Rouge. Baton Rouge
Baton Rouge is located in East Baton Rouge Parish and forms the heart of the Plantation Country Region. It is the capital of Louisiana and the second largest city in this state. Baton Rouge was founded in 1699 by the first European settlers and is also known by the nicknames “Red Stick” or “Hollyrouge”. The “Louisiana Art & Science Center”, the “Old State Capitol” and the “Rural Life Museum & Windrush Gardens” are well worth seeing. A visit to the “Nottoway Plantation”, which dates from the antebellum era, is also worthwhile. Whether exclusive shopping, extravagant restaurants or unique sights – Baton Rouge has it all to offer.
Covington
The small town of Covington is located in St. Tammany Parish and is at a fork of the Bogue Falaga and Tchefuncte Rivers. It was founded in 1813 by John Wharton Collins and was named after General Leonard Covington. The 3 m high statue of the former President Ronald Reagan, as well as the “St. Peter Catholic Church”, are particularly worth seeing. The charming southern parish has an eclectic mix of boutiques, art galleries, specialty shops, and restaurants lined up in the downtown area. A visit to the Historic District in the city center is also very worthwhile, where you will find many buildings from the 19th century that are lined with ancient oaks. The “Farmers Market” is always popular with tourists. a farmers’ market every Saturday and Wednesday. A visit to the “Covington Trailhead Museum”, the “HJ Smith’s Son General Store and Museum” and the microbrewery “Heiner Brau Brewery” is also recommended.
