The University of Vermont’s Department of Social Work is a vibrant and diverse community of students, faculty, staff, and alumni. The Department offers a Bachelor of Science in Social Work (BSSW) degree, which provides an opportunity to work with individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities to improve their well-being and functioning. Through the BSSW program, students gain a foundation in social work practice that includes knowledge in human behavior in the social environment; research and evaluation; social policy; program development and administration; practice with individuals, families, groups and communities; diversity and oppression; ethics; field instruction; and professional writing. Students also develop practical skills such as interviewing techniques, conflict resolution strategies, information gathering methods and problem-solving approaches. Additionally, students learn to apply evidence-based practice principles as they learn to assess needs for services related to mental health issues such as depression or anxiety disorders.
