Geography

Texas extends from the broad Gulf Coast Plains to the northwest over a land step (Balcones Escarpment) into the Great Plains (Edwards Plateau and Llano Estacado; 400-1,350 m above sea level). In the far west, Texas has a portion of the foothills of the Rocky Mountains (Guadalupe Peak 2,668 m above sea level). The rivers have strongly fluctuating water flow; the Red River, border river in the northeast, flows into the Mississippi, all others (including the border river in the southwest, Rio Grande) into the Gulf of Mexico. The coast is rich in lagoons (Intracoastal Waterway). The climate is warm-temperate, subtropical in the east and arid in the south-west. Annual rainfall varies from 1,400 mm in the east to 250 mm in the west, where cultivation is only possible with irrigation. Tornadoes occur frequently, and hurricanes on the Gulf Coast.
