North Carolina [ n ɔ ː.theta kærə la ɪ nə], German North Carolina, abbreviation N. C., post officially NC State in the Southeast, 126,149 km 2, (2015) 10.0 million residents (1960: 4.56 Million, 1980: 5.87 million, 2000: 8.05 million residents). North Carolina is divided into 100 counties. The capital is Raleigh.

Geography

North Carolina has a share of the Atlantic coastal plain with island-rich lagoon coast, to which Hatteras Island with Cape Hatteras belongs, and swamps, also on the Piedmont Plateau and the Appalachians with the Blue Ridge (Mount Mitchell 2,037 m above sea level) and with the Great Smoky Mountains. In the southeast, North Carolina has a subtropical climate with long hot summers and mild winters, in the west a humid continental climate with cooler summers.

Population

The proportion of whites was 71.5% in 2014, that of blacks 22.1%, and the other 6.4%. Largest cities are Charlotte, Raleigh, Greensboro, Winston-Salem and Durham.
