Baltimore
Baltimore [ b ɔ ː lt ɪ m ɔ ː ], largest city in Maryland, USA, at the far inland reaching the Chesapeake Bay of the Atlantic (2010) 621 000 residents (1970: 905,800 2000: 736,000 residents), as Metropolitan Area 2.71 million residents.As a major cultural center, Baltimore has numerous educational institutions, including Johns Hopkins University (founded in 1876), the University of Baltimore (founded in 1925) and Morgan State University. The numerous museums include the Walters Art Museum, the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Jewish Museum of Maryland, the Contemporary Museum, the B&O Railroad Museum, and the Edgar Allen Poe House and Museum. Baltimore is the seat of a Catholic Archbishop and an Anglican Bishop.
Economy
It is also one of the largest seaports in the USA and an old trading center (especially the seat of the insurance industry), which in the 20th century also developed into an important industrial location: shipbuilding and repair, copper and oil refineries, machine factories, steel and canning, chemical industry. The heavy industry crisis led to massive job losses and population decline in the city at the beginning of the 21st century.
Cityscape
The Basilica of the Assumption (1806–21), which was also the first Catholic church in the USA, is located in the center of the city, which is laid out according to plan with right-angled streets; to the north is the park-like Mount Vernon square with the Washington Monument (1815–42) in the form of a Doric column, to the south is the Charles Center (begun in 1959), a multifunctional building complex (the One Charles Center 1962 based on a design by M. van der Rohe) as well as several notable high-rise buildings, including the 160 m high USF & G Building. A new city district (Inner Harbor) has been created since 1968 through the redesign, modernization, renovation and demolition of former factories and buildings in the port area as well as the construction of new buildings (including the Baltimore World Trade Center by I. M. Pei, 1977) and establishment of cultural attractions (National Aquarium, Maryland Science Center, Museum of Industry, museum ship “USS Constellation”).
