History

The Delaware coast was among others. discovered by G. Caboto (1498) and G. da Verrazano (1524). In 1609 a Dutch expedition under H. Hudson explored for the first time the Delaware area, in which v. a. the Indian tribes of the Delaware (north and center) and Susquehannock (west) lived. When the Dutch established the first European settlement (Zwaanendael, today Lewes) on the soil of Delaware in 1631, they were killed by Indians. The first permanent colony was established in 1638 with the construction of Fort Christina (now Wilmington) under Swedish sovereignty (New Sweden). In 1655 Delaware fell to the Dutch, in 1664 with their colony New Amsterdam to England. Integrated into Pennsylvania in 1682, the Delaware area received its own administration within this colony (Three Lower Counties) and was able to enforce its independence in the course of the independence movement in 1775. On December 7, 1787, Delaware became the first state to ratify the constitution of the Union. In the Civil War, Delaware stood by the Union.
