California Long Valley
Californian Central Valley, English Great Valley of California [ gre ɪ t VAEL ɪ ɔ f Kael ɪ f ɔ ː njə], part of the grave zone that extends into North America along the Pacific coast from the Gulf of California to Alaska, California, USA. The over 700 km long, on average 80 km wide trench betweenSierra Nevada and Cascade Range in the east and the Coast Ranges in the west are delimited in the north by the Klamath Mountains, in the south by smaller mountain ranges in an east-west direction. The Californian long valley was probably formed at the same time as the bulge of the Sierra Nevada and the Klamath Mountains; in the western part it fell more sharply than in the east (average height below 150 m above sea level). The San Andreas Fault moves through the Coast Ranges. – The annual precipitation stays below 500 mm, in the southern part even below 250 mm and falls as winter rain.
Thanks to fertile soils and artificial irrigation, the California Long Valley is one of the most important agricultural areas in the USA. Its northern part, the Sacramento Valley (drained from the Sacramento River), is mainly oriented towards the cultivation of wheat, rice, sugar beets, fruits, vegetables and forage crops as well as cattle breeding (milk production). In its southern part, the San Joaquin Valley (drained by the San Joaquin River), v. a. Produces vegetables, citrus fruits, cotton and wine. – The actual settlement was triggered by the gold found in the Sacramento Valley in 1848.
San Andreas Fault
San Andreas Fault [Saen ændre ɪ s f ɔ ː lt, English], San Andreas fault, tectonic fault zone in California, extends from the northern end of the Gulf of California in a northwest direction through the Imperial Valley, through the Colorado Desert east of Los Angeles, then west of the California long valley through the Coast Ranges to Point Arena, a cape 180 km northwest of San Francisco. From here it continues into the sea floor. To the southeast it is connected to the East Pacific Ridge (part of the Central Ocean Ridge) via the Gulf of California. The more than 1,100 km long San Andreas Fault forms the border between the North American and Pacific plates. The latter is shifted in the horizontal direction to the north-west of the former (horizontal or leaf displacement, in the sense of plate tectonics a transform fault). The average rate of movement of the plates is 5 cm / year, at the main fault, the San Andreas Fault, 3.5 cm. The rest of the rate results from other, smaller disturbances to the west and east of it. Vertical shifts also occur. The movements began 20–30 million years ago. In central California, the total displacement is about 300 km. The growing tensions in the earth’s crust on the movement surfaces trigger episodically violent earthquakes, for example in San Francisco in 1857, 1865, 1868 and BC. a. 1906 as well as 1940 and 1989. In 2003 and 2004 two earthquakes measuring 6.5 and 6 respectively were registered. Since then, significantly more subterranean tremors have been detected in the region than before 2003. In 2008, a study by the US geological service was published.
