Agriculture is dependent on artificial irrigation and is of little importance (cattle and sheep farming, as well as the cultivation of potatoes and onions). Important Air Force bases with Nellis Air Force Base and the Nevada Test Site. Yucca Mountain is under discussion as a storage facility for nuclear waste.


Nevada, part of New Spain during the colonial period, was ceded by Mexico to the USA by the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848 and formed the western part of the Utah Territory since 1850. Only sparsely populated by Mormons since 1851, the area received strong influx from California as a result of rich gold discoveries (especially Comstock Lode). In 1861, Nevada was organized as a territory and on October 31, 1864, it became the 36th state in the Union.
