Public Affairs Schools in Connecticut

History

Settlement of Connecticut began in 1614 with the discovery of the Connecticut River by the Dutch, who established the first trading bases here after 1624. Englishmen from Massachusetts founded further settlements after 1633, which in 1639 gave themselves a kind of written constitution (“Fundamental Orders”, especially self-government of the communities). Charles II of England granted the colony extensive self-government in 1662. In 1664, the colony of New Haven, which had been settled since 1638 and expanded in 1643, was annexed. Connecticut, largely independent by its own choice of governors, had significant influence in the independence movement. On January 9, 1788, it became the fifth state to ratify the constitution of the Union, but did not adopt a new constitution until 1818.
