Colorado [English k ɔ lə r ɑ ː də ʊ ], abbreviations Col. or Colo. Post officially CO, state in the western United States, 268,602 km 2, (2015) 5460000 residents (1960: 1.75 Million, 1980: 2.89 million, 2000: 4.30 million residents). Capital is Denver; Administratively, Colorado is divided into 64 administrative districts (counties).

According to the constitution of 1876 (with numerous changes) there is a Senate with 35 and a House of Representatives with 65 members. Colorado is represented in Congress by 2 senators and 7 MPs.

Geography

Colorado includes in the west part of the Rocky Mountains (forested up to the tree line in 3 400–3 500 m above sea level, in Mount Elbert 4 402 m high) and the Colorado Plateau. In the east, Colorado has a share of the semi-arid, steppe-like plateau of the Great Plains (900-1,600 m above sea level). While the plateaus have annual precipitation amounts of less than 400 mm, in the mountains more than 1,500 mm are measured in some cases.

Population

The proportion of whites in the population was 87.7% in 2014, that of blacks 4.5%; Indians 1.6% and 6.2% others.
