Phoenix
Phoenix [ fi ː n ɪ ks], capital and largest city of the state of Arizona, USA, at the Salt River in an irrigation field development area, (2010) 1.45 million residents (1950: 106,800, 2000: 1.32 million residents), of which (2010) 71% white and 5.1% black, 34% belong to the Hispanics;the metropolitan area includes, inter alia Mesa, Scottsdale and Tempe and has 3.87 million residents, largest metropolitan area growth in the USA in the 1990s; Catholic and Anglican bishopric; Heard Museum (Indian art and culture), Phoenix Art Museum (American and Far Eastern art, European Renaissance and Baroque art). Since the Second World War, in connection with the nearby air force bases in Phoenix, the aircraft and electronics industry, production of chemicals for agriculture, has been established. Favored by the warm, dry climate, the Phoenix area became a popular recreational and residential area (including Scottsdale, Sun City).
State Capitol (completed in 1900) with museum; Culture and Congress Center (Civic Plaza); Will Bruder Public Library (1996); Extension of the Phoenix Art Museum by Tod Williams and Billie Tsien (1997). – Remains of the Hohokam culture can be found near Phoenix.
