Alabama Adventure Theme Park

In Bessemer is the “Alabama Adventure Theme Park” which is the second largest tourist attraction in Alabama. It was opened in 1998 and offers more than 30 attractions with numerous rides, such as 7 water rides and 3 roller coasters.

Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame

The “Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame” is the counterpart to the “Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame”, which honors the most famous musicians of jazz. The “Jazz Hall of Fame” was founded in 1978 and the associated museum opened a few years later. The “Jazz Hall of Fame” shows various exhibits and multimedia pieces on a huge exhibition area. Paintings, quilts, instruments, and memorabilia are also on display.

Alabama Museum of Natural History

This famous natural history museum, which was founded in 1831, is located in Tuscaloosa. It is considered to be the oldest museum in Alabama and the largest natural history museum in the entire state. The museum is an important part of the University of Alabama. Many impressive exhibits can be seen here, such as the skeleton of a giant whale or a mammoth skull. However, the meteorite on display is also unique. This hit the small town of Sylacauga in 1954.

Alabama State Capitol

In the capital, Montgomery, is the Alabama’s parliament building, built in neoclassical style. The building was built around 1850 and initially served as the Confederation’s first parliament building. To commemorate it, there is still a brass plate where the first and only southern president was sworn in.

Ave Maria Grotto

Cullman is home to the Ave Maria Grotto, a small park with miniature editions of important ecclesiastical buildings from around the world. The park is also affectionately known as “Jerusalem in miniature format”. All the mini-churches and religious buildings on display were made by hand by the Bavarian Benedictine monk Joseph Zoettel. All 125 of his miniature masterpieces are still on the campus of St. Bernard’s monastery today. You can see, for example, the Tower of Babel or the Leaning Tower of Pisa. The “Ave Maria Grotto Park” was added to the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage and the National Register of Historic Places, as well as being declared a Historic District.
