Experimental Psychology
Experimental psychology, investigation of psychological issues with experimental methods.
Experimental psychology as an independent branch of science emerged in the second half of the 19th century. Pioneers were G. Th. Fechner and W. Wundt. The latter founded the world’s first psychological laboratory in Leipzig in 1879. Experimental psychology included initially investigations of sensory sensations. H. Ebbinghaus started the experimental exploration of what he called the higher functions of the soul, especially the memory, and eventually most areas of psychology were tried to be explored by experimental methods.
In today’s psychology, the experimental approach has gained in most psychological research areas, and therefore no longer characterizes any specific psychological subject area.
