Existential Psychology

Existential psychology, a direction within clinical psychology which in its approach to suffering people is based on philosophical existentialism, and in particular the works of Kierkegaard, Heidegger and Sartre).

Existential psychology emphasizes the freedom of man to choose, his responsibility and the opportunity to find the meaning of life for himself. Existential psychology emphasizes the theory of evolution and the biological aspects of human life and suffering. Existential psychology will therefore, in its most pure form, be opposed to concepts such as illness, diagnosis and treatment in the face of mentally ill people. Instead, symptoms are understood as meaningful and real experiences that can help the patient to gain a deeper understanding of himself and his situation.

The task of the therapist will, to a greater extent than other forms of therapy, be as a fellow human being, an example, which creates an atmosphere that promotes freedom of thought and self-reflection. The direction was especially developed in the decades that followed the Second World War with the Swiss people Ludwig Binswanger and Medard Boss as key figures.
