Adolescent Psychology

Adolescent psychology is the study and teaching of the transitional period between childhood and adulthood. In our cultural circle, this period is long, where in some situations the identity of the adult is assigned and in the other child. In other cultures, the transition can be abrupt and marked in the form of various rituals.

The relatively rapid biological maturation can result in uncertainty, both in relation to one’s own body and identity. For many, the age can be characterized by turmoil and personality instability with crises and conflicts.

The German-American psychologist Erik H. Erikson sees it all as an expression of a test and a search for identity, which can in many cases result in conflicts, especially in relation to parents and authority figures. However, mastering the problems is necessary for the adult’s identity to be developed. A more independent and reflective attitude is also under development, which leads to values and norms being critically assessed. Parents can be subjected to serious tests, their views being subjected to trial and criticism, while changing contact forms. Smaller groups and “clicks” are of great importance and many speak of a special youth culture. Young people in Western culture belong to a marginal group that is subjected to strong pressure with partly contradictory expectations.

Death Valley National Park

Death Valley, or Údolí smrti in Czech, is the lowest place in America and actually the entire Western Hemisphere. This entire area is considered the driest place and the hottest desert in the world. The average annual precipitation does not even reach 5 cm. In the summer months, there is extreme and unbearable heat, when the mercury on the thermometer usually rises above 50°C. The main tourist season in Death Valley takes place during the winter, as the climate is a bit more tolerable. Tourists have the option of staying in air-conditioned rooms or campsites.

The park covers an area of 8,000 km2 towards the southwest of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in the Great Depression, at the edge of the Mojave Desert. The valley stretches for 225 km and is part of the national park of the same name, which was declared in 1994. The valley got its name Death Valley because of the inhospitable conditions that prevail here, but also because of the terrifying legends associated with the area. Despite how unfriendly and inhospitable the landscape is, resilient forms of life are maintained here. 1000 species of plants were discovered here, which were able to cope with these specific conditions. These hardy plants include, for example, various types of cacti.

In the distant past, more than 500 million years ago, this area was covered by the sea, so today the whole area is rich in fossils. In addition, there are also rich deposits of minerals and salts. The surrounding rocks and mountain ridges were formed by the folding and movement of the earth’s crust.

The modern history of Death Valley is connected with an interesting mineral – borax. Its deposit was discovered in 1881 at the bottom of the valley. Since it was highly valued and in demand in the market at the time, within 2 years the Harmony Borax Works facility was built here, taking care of the mining and subsequent processing of minerals. It was also necessary to get the mined minerals from the desert to civilization, which is why the Twenty Mule Team Trail was created. In 1888, the company went bankrupt and continued mining. Today, however, you can see the remains of the equipment and the ruins of the buildings of that time. A borax museum was opened in the oldest building built in 1883.

More and more people were drawn here by the sight of wealth when word spread that, in addition to borax, there were also rich deposits of gold, silver, copper and other minerals. But as soon as everything essential was mined, the people left, leaving behind only abandoned towns and settlements. These are called Ghost Towns today. The most famous towns are Panamit City, Ballarat, Chloride City, Rhyolite, Harrisburg, Greenwater, Skidoo or Leadfield.

Tourists come to Death Valley mainly to admire the natural attractions, which are really plentiful here. One of them, for example, is part of the Badwater salt field, which is 86 meters below sea level, making it the lowest place in the Western Hemisphere. In contrast, the highest peak of the national park, Teleskope Peak, located in the Panamit Range, reaches an altitude of 3,368 meters. The view of numerous canyons, impressive rock formations, sand dunes, volcanic craters and natural bridges is also breathtaking. The most beautiful view of the entire Death Valley can be seen from Dante’s View, located at a height of 1669 meters above sea level. Another attraction of the valley is the Devil’s Golf Course salt field, where only a thick layer of salt remained after the evaporation of the original lake.

Modern times have brought with them all sorts of conveniences, so even among the arid desert landscape you can come across a fresh green golf course. A date forest and a palm grove were planted nearby, which survives here only thanks to artificial irrigation. Whether you visit only the main tourist attractions in Death Valley or go on a more adventurous journey, it will always leave you with unique memories. In addition, here at night you can observe a beautiful sky dotted with millions of stars. You will not see them in such quantity anywhere else in the world.
