Bias in Psychology
Bias in psychology, is used in cognitive psychology, social psychology, assessment psychology and other branches of social science about statements, choices and judgments that systematically deviate from what is consistent with reality.
Some examples:
Anchoring– attaching too much importance to a particular point of view in judgment, such as when something that occurs first in a sequence of information dominates the overall impression. Specifically, you may be willing to pay more in a negotiating situation if the one you negotiate with starts at a higher level
Confirmation tendency– the fact that we seek information that confirms the assumptions we have in the first place
” I-knew-it-all-the-time” bias – hindsight, the fact that one has an excessive belief that what happened could be expected
Optimism bias– tendency to wishful thinking
Status quo-bias– systematic tendency to prefer known over new alternatives
Overconfidence– being safe, where you should have been more careful (answers people give with “99% certainty” are often wrong)
Accessibility– the fact that one overestimates something, because this is something known or easily accessible.
How important is such bias? One thing is that in everyday life we can think and act a little across what is correct. This is well documented, not least through Kahneman and Tversky’s work. But what about experts? See recommended reading for some thought-provoking examples.
