Humanistic Psychology

In the 1960s, a psychological direction developed that opposed the scientific and academic tradition that, despite differences, represented both psychoanalysis and behaviorism. Humanistic psychology rejected laboratory studies and animal experiments as a basis for understanding human behavior. Instead, it gave the person’s own experiences, choices and values weight in the understanding of the human psyche. It emphasized human self-determination and choices. Carl Rogers (1902-1987) was one of the most leading humanist psychologists as the creator of client-centered therapy.

Maslow

Abraham Maslow (1908-1970) has probably had the most significance for the establishment of humanistic psychology as his own psychological direction. His contributions were in the fields of personality psychology and motivational psychology. In 1943 he published the first draft of Maslow’s needs pyramid, which was further developed in 1971 in the book The farther reaches and human nature, which was published after his death. Here he introduces the theory that human needs are arranged in four levels:

need for growth and self-realization,

social needs (affiliation and recognition),
security needs and
bodily needs with

Physical needs are the most fundamental and must be satisfied before the other needs.
