Gerontological Psychology

Gerontological psychology is the study of older people’s living conditions and the psychological processes associated with aging. Gerontological psychology is a field that is growing in line with the increased life expectancy of the population. Improved health and increased life expectancy mean that old age is not only a phase of life for closure and death, but also for change and development.

Psychological aspects of aging and learning ability, memory, intelligence, personality, coping, social relationships, working life, retirement, physical and mental health, institutionalization, influence on one’s life and relationship with death are among the topics being studied. The study is associated with methodological difficulties, as it is difficult to distinguish between the psychological changes associated with the aging process itself and the changes that must be attributed to environmental and cultural differences between the generations.

Psychologically, aging is characterized primarily by cognitive impairment. Both short-term and long-term memory are impaired by aging. However, research shows that those who subjectively experience having impaired memory often have average or above average memory for their age. Ability to get into new things is impaired by aging. Controlled studies show that education, physical activity, lung capacity and self-efficacy, in the above order, are associated with high cognitive capacity in old age. Furthermore, studies show that actively using one’s abilities, for example in crossword puzzles and other forms of “brainstorming”, helps to maintain learning ability.

For gerontological psychology, it is important to deepen the understanding of the social and personal situation of the elderly. Problems related to retirement and institutional stay have been investigated, as well as the reactions of the elderly to the loss of the next of kin. Mental reactions to illnesses and altered bodily functions have also been elucidated through research. Loss of close relatives and impairment of one’s own health, economy, working life and social status increase the risk of mental health problems such as depression and suicide. Single elderly people, especially men, are a high-risk group for suicide. At the same time, some people experience life changes through retirement and the loss of their partner as an opportunity for change and a new way of life. Overall, research shows that perceived influence and control, even over small details such as food choices and access to personal assets, increases well-being and health. This is especially important for institutional stays.

Psychologist Erik H. Erikson argued that old age was characterized by a crisis with two possible outcomes: ego integrity or hopelessness. Recent aging research mentions old age in far more positive terms such as retirement / release and summary / swan singing, provided one has reasonably good finances and health.

Underwater world in a Florida aquarium in Tampa

COMPETITION ARTICLE – On our vacation in Florida, next to the Everglades National Park and the city of Miami, I was most interested in the Tampa Underwater Aquarium. Without fins, glasses and a mask, everyone can see the beauty of the underwater world up close. Sharks, rays, sea turtles, moray eels, seahorses, jellyfish and other sea animals live in huge aquariums here among corals.

The Florida Aquarium, as the Tampa Aquarium is the English name, is run by a non-profit organization to educate and bring the underwater world closer to all. The aquarium was inaugurated in 1995 after many years of planning and today is among the 10 most beautiful and largest aquariums in the United States according to TripAdvisor.com.
