Neuropsychology
Neuropsychology can be defined as the study of relationships between brain and behavior, that is, the study of the relationship between behavior and structures and functions of the nervous system. Neuropsychology is divided into experimental neuroscience and applied science / clinical neuropsychology.
In clinical neuropsychological studies, brain function is investigated using a wide range of tests of cognitive, emotional, and behavioral functions.
The title of specialist in neuropsychology means that the psychologist has completed a five-year specialization program in clinical neuropsychology with the requirements for practice, supervision, courses and written work defined in the Norwegian Psychological Association ‘s specialist regulations, with supplementary provisions for the specialization area in neuropsychology.
Study
Neuropsychological assessments are requested in functional, course and / or differential diagnostic assessments.
Functional assessments are made where there is known injury, illness or disability, and where the consequences of this are desired to be mapped.
Progress assessments are intended to capture changes in function / performance over time, for example, in the development of a progressive condition, rehabilitation after injury / illness, or through drug testing.
Differential diagnostic assessments can help to clarify whether difficulties experienced are due to mental illness or psychosocial stress, or are primarily caused by organic disease or injury.
Tester
The study is carried out using a wide set of individual tests where you can compare test results with norms you have for healthy people when you take into account age and education. The number and choice of tests will to some extent depend on the problem. The interpretation emphasizes both changes that are possibly detected and the pattern of the changes that are possibly detected (also called test profile).
Often, systematic assessment of psychosocial functioning and mental symptom load will also be relevant. Many issues will include personality assessments. This is done by using structured mapping tools, such as self- and comparative questionnaires or structured clinical interviews.
In Norway, only authorized psychologists, and preferably psychologists, can write a report based on a neuropsychological study. Several of the tests used in neuropsychological investigations have requirements for expertise in purchasing and use, where the minimum requirement is most often that the buyer and user is a licensed psychologist.
