AUSTIN
Right in the middle there instead of just. This is roughly how one could describe the capital of the US state of Texas, Austin, with a population of almost 850,000. If you look at the map of Texas, you can find Austin almost in the middle. South of Dallas, west of Houston and north of San Antonio is “Silicon Hills”. Right on the Colorado River, the largest river in the US Southwest at 2,333 km.
Austin is called “Silicon Hills” for two reasons. On the one hand, there is a collection of hills in the western outskirts of the city, the height of which usually does not exceed 100 meters. The locals call this area Hill Country. The highest point at 556 meters above sea level is “Enchanted Rock” – an igneous deep rock. Incidentally, Hill Country is a popular travel destination, which sometimes had to be provided with an admission stop. On the other hand, Austin is coveted as the headquarters of many companies in the “New Economy”. Local employers include B. Google, Facebook, Dell, Apple and Samsung – to name a few.
Austin is home to the University of Texas, one of the largest universities in America. Around 50,000 students let their brain cells work here. A large number of these students can certainly be found again during the numerous possible leisure activities.
Live music is very important in everyday life, because in Austin it is not only available in the evenings, but first musical contact is guaranteed after landing at the airport. So don’t be surprised if music can be heard in department stores, on the side of the road, or at city council meetings. Music or live music is played in well over 200 clubs, bars and concert halls. Recommended here include Pete’s Dueling Piano Bar, The Broken Spoke or the Continental Club.
If the sun is shining during the day, the hiking trail along Lady Bird Lake should definitely be tackled. Or you can just walk along the southern part of the Colorado River for about 4 miles from Lady Bird Lake, ideally heading west. At the end of this stretch you find yourself in Barton Springs. For the “Austinites”, the name of the residents in the vernacular, this is the ultimate temple of relaxation. The water there should be quite cold, but all the more refreshing because it comes from a natural spring.
After you have cooled down properly, you can now tackle “skydiving”. IFly is located just 25 km north of the cool water. An indoor skydiving center that you should definitely try.
If there is still enough power available, you should go to the Congress Avenue Bridge in the summer months. In the evening hours there is a natural spectacle to marvel at. Almost 1.5 million bats hunt in competition.
