The economic basis of Tulsa is the rich oil and natural gas reserves of the area (Midcontinent Field), seat of oil companies; Petroleum refineries, manufacture of petroleum extraction equipment. Tulsa was considered the “Oil Capital of the World” until the early 1980s.

Founded in 1836 as a settlement of Creek Indians who immigrated from Alabama; the first white settlers came after the connection to the railroad in 1882. The oil (first discoveries 1901 and 1905) brought Tulsa, since 1908 City, an uninterrupted economic upswing.
