Oklahoma City

Oklahoma City came into being in 1889 when parts of Indian territory were opened to white settlers. – In a bomb attack on the downtown “Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building” on April 19, 1995, 168 people died (at the site of the attack in 2000, the “Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum” was opened). In May 2013, a tornado in the southern suburb of Moore claimed more than 24 lives (damage amounting to around US $ 1 billion).

Tulsa

Tulsa [ t ʌ lsə], city in Nordostoklahoma, USA, on the Arkansas River, which is navigable from Tulsa, 387,800 residents; the metropolitan area has 859,500 residents; catholic bishopric; University of Tulsa (founded in 1894 as a Presbyterian college, university status since 1920, state since 1928), Oral Roberts University (founded 1965), art museums, zoo. The economic basis of Tulsa is the rich oil and natural gas reserves of the area (Midcontinent Field), seat of oil companies; Petroleum refineries, manufacture of petroleum extraction equipment. Tulsa was considered the “Oil Capital of the World” until the early 1980s.

Founded in 1836 as a settlement of Creek Indians who immigrated from Alabama; the first white settlers came after the connection to the railroad in 1882. The oil (first discoveries 1901 and 1905) brought Tulsa, since 1908 City, an uninterrupted economic upswing.
