Economy

The most important branches of agriculture are animal husbandry (dairy farming, poultry) and the cultivation of wheat, maize and soybeans. Minnesota is one of the largest producers of iron ore in the United States; the ores in the Mesabi Range are largely mined. In addition to processing agricultural products, Minnesota v. a. Mechanical engineering, chemical, electronic and paper industries. Duluth, located on Lake Superior, has one of the largest inland ports in the United States.

History

The area, which is important for traffic as the watershed of three electricity systems, was developed by the French as part of their fur trade area since the middle of the 17th century. The eastern part came under British ownership in the Peace of Paris of 1763 and the US as part of the Northwest Territory in the Peace of Paris of 1783, but remained under British influence until 1816. The greater part of the west of the Mississippi was bought by the USA in 1803 in the Louisiana Purchase (Louisiana) acquired. The first permanent settlement was Fort Snelling (1819/20, now Minneapolis). In 1849 Minnesota was organized as a territory and on May 11, 1858, it became the 32nd state to join the Union. In 1862 government forces put down a Sioux uprising. German and Scandinavian immigrants in particular let the population grow rapidly in the second half of the 19th century.
