Kansas [ kænzəs], abbreviation Kans. Post officially KS, state located in the geographical center of the United States, 211,880 km 2, (2015) 2910000 residents (1960: 2.18 million, 1980: 2.36 million, 2000: 2.69 million residents). Kansas is divided into 105 counties. The capital is Topeka.

Geography
Kansas belongs to the westward rising table landscape of the Great Plains (about 200 to 1,200 m above sea level) and had predominantly steppe vegetation (short grass steppe) before cultivation; the hilly northeast is forested. The climate is continental with precipitation decreasing to the west (from 900 mm in the east to less than 300 mm); severe droughts, exacerbated by hot dust storms, including blizzards and tornadoes, are not uncommon.
Population
The proportion of whites was 86.8% in 2014, that of blacks 6.3%, others 6.9%. Biggest cities are Wichita, Overland Park, Kansas City and Topeka.
