Chicago History
Chicago, which emerged from Fort Dearborn, which was founded in 1803, received city rights in 1837. With the development of shipping on the Great Lakes and the expansion of the railway network, the city experienced a rapid upswing. It had (1848) 20,000, (1870) 300,000, (1900) 1.7 million, (1940) 3.2 million residents. After the American Civil War (1861–65), the social and economic structure changed due to the expansion of large-scale industry and the multiethnic influx of immigrants. Chicago became the center of economic and cultural life in the Midwest and was the scene of social conflicts (Haymarket Riot 1886, Pullman Strike 1894; gangster disorder, serious racial problems). From October 8th to October 10th, 1871, the city was largely destroyed by fire, but a world exhibition was held here as early as 1893.
