History

The Hawaiian Islands were first settled by Polynesia (Marquesas Islands) around AD 400 and Tahiti around AD 900/1000. J. Cook, who visited it in 1778 as the first European, and (after the then head of the British Admiralty John Mantagu Sandwich [* 1718, † 1792]) Sandwich Islands named, was killed here on 14. 2. 1779 by natives. The existing small and territorially unstable kingdoms on the Hawaiian Islands were established by Kamehameha I (* 1758 ?, † 1819) in 1782–1810.who ruled the island of Hawaii, united into one kingdom. With the onset of proselytizing by Presbyterian missionaries (1820), the displacement of native culture began on the islands. At the same time, based on trade interests, the influence of the USA against European powers (above all Great Britain, France) grew. Under King Kamehameha III. (* 1814, † 1854, reigned 1825–54) a constitution was enacted in 1840. A reciprocity agreement (1875) ensured duty-free sales of Hawaiian sugar in the USA, an amendment (1887) allowed this expansion and sole use of the Pearl Harbor naval base. Attempts by Queen Lilioukalani (* 1838, † 1917; Reign 1891–93) to curb American influence, led to their overthrow and the establishment of the Republic of Hawaii (1894). When the islands gained great strategic importance for the United States in connection with the Spanish-American War, they were annexed in 1898 and organized as the Territory of Hawaii in 1900. During the confrontation with Japan and later China expanded to become the strategically most important base of the USA (the Second World War began for the USA with the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941) and the archipelago became economically and culturally completely dependent on the USA admitted to the Union on August 21, 1959 as the 50th federal state.
