Florida [English fl ɔ r ɪ də], abbreviation Fla. Post officially FL, the southeastern US state, 138,905 km 2, (2016) 20.6 million residents (1960: 4.9 million, 1980: 9, 75 million, 2000: 16.0 million residents). Florida is divided into 67 counties. The capital is Tallahassee, the largest cities are Jacksonville, Miami, Tampa and Saint Petersburg.

Law and Politics

According to the constitution of 1968 (in force since 1969) there is a Senate with 40 members (elected for four years) and a House of Representatives with 120 members (elected for two years). In the federal congress Florida is represented by 27 representatives, in the Senate by 2.

Geography

The state comprises the approximately 650 km long Florida peninsula, which extends south between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico, as well as a strip of the Gulf Coast Plain in the northwest. The east coast of Florida is compensation coast with landings, sandy beaches, spits, beach lakes and lagoon; the west coast includes bays (e.g. Tampa Bay) and Haffs. A chain of coral islands runs from the southern tip to the southwest (Florida Keys). Florida is a geologically young sediment table (up to 100 m above sea level) with partly karstified limestone plateaus, sand deposits and lakes. In the south of the peninsula the Everglades wetland extends.

The climate is subtropical, mild and dry in winter, tropical in the extreme south; Rainfall over 1,300 mm per year, maximum from May to October. Occasionally, Florida is threatened by cold snaps, more common are hurricanes that can cause severe damage, such as. B. Hurricane »Irma« in September 2017.

Population

The proportion of whites was 77.6% in 2016, that of blacks 16.8%, others 5.6%. The Hispanics (23.1% of the population) are mostly Cubans, they are particularly concentrated in the greater Miami area.
