Little rock
Little Rock [ l ɪ tl r ɔ k], capital of the state Arkansas, USA, on the Arkansas River, 184 100 residents; the metropolitan area has 610,500 residents; Seat of an Anglican, a Catholic and a Methodist bishop; Branch of the University of Arkansas; Arkansas Museum of Science and History. The industry supplies cottonseed oil, foodstuffs, chemicals, cosmetics, telecommunications technology, furniture, and caravans. At Little Rock there are significant bauxite pits with an alumina plant and an aluminum smelter.
Several houses from the early 19th century, the first Capitol Building (1821–36) and the Old State House (1836–1911; now a museum and library) have been preserved. C. Gilbert built what is now the State Capitol in 1917. In 2004 the William Jefferson Clinton Presidential Center (with museum, archive, library) was opened on the banks of the Arkansas River.
Little Rock was founded in 1812 and became the capital of the Arkansas Territory in 1821. In 1957/58 it was the scene of violent disputes over equality for blacks.
