Montgomery
Montgomery [mənt g ʌ mər ɪ ], capital of the State of Alabama, USA, the Alabama River, (2010) 263 900 residents.
Alabama State University (founded as a college in 1874, university since 1969), Auburn University; Trade center for cotton and cattle; Glass, textile, fertilizer and v. a. Furniture industry; two air force bases near the city help to boost the economy. The largest group of the population with almost 50% are the Afro-Americans.
Numerous buildings from the 19th century in the cityscape, including the State Capitol (1851) and Saint John’s Church (1855); magnificent country estates in the area.
Created in 1819 by the merger of three settlements, Montgomery became the capital of Alabama in 1846/47. Seat of the Constituent Assembly and Provisional Government of the Confederate States of America until May 20, 1861.
With the bus boycott organized by M. L. King in 1955/56 to abolish racial segregation in public transport and the protest march from Selma to Montgomery in 1965, Montgomery became a center of the American civil rights movement.

Birmingham, [ bə ː m ɪ ŋ hæm], largest city in Alabama, USA, on the southwestern edge of the Appalachian Mountains, 212 100 residents, of which 73% Black (Metropolitan Area 1.14 million residents); catholic bishopric; University (founded in 1969). The industry, long characterized by the production of iron and steel, is now supplemented by their processing, as well as by the chemical, electrotechnical, cement and cotton industries; Service center (banks, insurance companies); Airport.

Dexter Parsonage Museum
In Montgomery is the “Dexter Parsonage Museum” which was built in the 1920’s. Some clergymen of the Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church used to live here. The famous Martin Luther King also lived here with his family for a few years. Today the former home is a museum, which shows exhibitions on the civil rights movement.
Dr. Francis Medical Museum & Apothecary
The Dr. Francis Medical Museum is a Jacksonville museum devoted to the history of professional medical practice in the state of Alabama. The museum was founded in 1974 and has an old doctor’s office, which is owned by Dr. JC Francis, a former family doctor in town. The museum is located in the original building from 1850, which served as a doctor’s office for more than 40 years. There are many interesting things to see here, such as a number of apothecary jars, old first-aid kits, surgical instruments and medicine bottles. Antique furniture, tools, magazines and books are also on display.
First White House of the Confederacy
Montgomery is home to the Confederate States’ first White House. The building from 1835, was built in the classical style and served in 1861 as the official residence of the Southern President Jefferson Davis. Even today there are pieces of furniture and furnishings from the 1850’s to 1860’s in the house. The “First White House” was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
Fort Mitchell Historic Site
The reconstructed Fort Mitchell dates back to 1813 and served in the war against the Creek Tribe for many years. In the attached museum, visitors can learn everything there is to know about the fort’s history. The fort has been declared a National Historic Landmark and has a permanent place in the National Register of Historic Places.
Horseshoe Bend National Military Park
In Daviston, the Horseshoe Bend National Military Park was established on the site of the last battle against the Native Americans (the Creek Indians). The park offers great recreational opportunities and brings history to life for its visitors. The area is also very suitable for hiking.
