Close your eyes. Head cinema on! You’re just lying in the sun on the beach. It’s around 30 degrees. You feel the slight urge to plunge into the cool water. But hold on. Even there the water has a temperature of at least 24 degrees. Where are we right now? At least not in your home. But on Waikiki Beach – namely Waikiki Beach. The coastline just mentioned is one of the most famous beaches in the world and belongs to the capital of the US state of Hawaii called Honolulu. This pleasant piece of earth is, if you want to be precise, on the island of O’ahu. And O’ahu is one of the eight main islands in the Hawaiian archipelago. The warm temperatures averaging 29 degrees throughout the year and the few rainy days on average are a big argument for holidaymakers, to spend the days in Hawaii. With just over 300,000 residents, Honolulu is the capital of Hawaii and therefore one of the largest cities in the Pacific.
In connection with Honolulu, the port of Pearl Harbor must also be mentioned. Pearl Harbor is the headquarters of the United States Navy’s Pacific Fleet, the naval unit of the US Armed Forces. In the morning of December 7th, 1941, an unannounced air raid on Japan killed 2,403 Americans. The battleship, the USS Arizona, which sank within nine minutes of the attack and has a crew of over 1,000, is today a memorial to this sad day in US history. The USS Arizona Memorial was anchored above the wreck and can now be viewed by boat.
In order to be able to switch off from this memorable impression, it is recommended to visit the beautiful places around Honolulu. Lanikai Beach is less than 20 miles away. Nearby are the Moku-Iua Islands, which are surrounded by turquoise-blue water and are therefore ideal for snorkeling. Rent a kayak in Kailua and paddle around the area. Or do you like it a little fresher? Then head to the Nuuanu Pali Lookout. An approximately 300 meter high elevation on which the wind literally blows your face away. The big plus here is that you can enjoy wonderful views of the north and east coasts of O’ahu. Of course, ideal for souvenir photos. Another of your probably many photos can be taken of a city landmark.
Back to Waikiki. The beach is about 2km long. The hotels stand close together and were built mainly high up. If you don’t like mass tourism, you should stay away from Waikiki. However, if you can’t surf yet, Waikiki Beach is probably one of the safest places to practice surfing. The waves here are well-disposed towards surfing beginners and are not too high and also almost reach the beach. If surfing is already in the blood, you can even go to one of the most famous beaches for surfers and onlookers. Sunset Beach. The best surfing conditions for experts can be found there. A little hard to find for tourists, there is even an even more exclusive spot in surfer’s paradise. Namely Bonzai Pipeline. Here you can find the perfect waves.
If you got sore muscles from surfing, you can go to the Makapu’u Light House and see the Pacific Ocean from a height of 250 meters. In the period from November to April it may even be possible to watch humpback whales from here. Wow!
