San Antonio (Texas)
San Antonio, [sænən tə ʊ n ɪ ə ʊ ], city in south Texas, USA, in a vegetable and fruit development area, 1.44 million people (1900: 53,300, 1940: 253,900 residents), more than half of Hispanics.
Seat of a Catholic Archbishop and a Methodist Bishop; University of Texas at San Antonio (founded 1969), Saint Mary’s University of San Antonio (founded 1852), Trinity University (founded 1869), medical research institutes, museums, zoo. The city developed rapidly after 1940 through military facilities (especially air force training centers), which led to the establishment of industrial companies. Many companies belong to the automotive, finance and energy industries. Tourism is an important economic factor, including sponsored by amusement parks (“SeaWorld” and “Six Flags”); international Airport.
The city is rich in buildings from the colonial era, including Spanish governor’s palace (1749). There are five mission stations along the San Antonio River (World Heritage Site since 2015), including the San José de Aguayo mission station (founded in 1720) and San Antonio de Valero.
Founded in 1718 as a Spanish garrison. The former Spanish Mission San Antonio de Valero (called Alamo), built in 1744, converted into a fortress in 1794, fought over in the Texan War of Independence in 1836, is now a memorial.
