Memphis Brooks Museum of Art
The “Memphis Brooks Museum of Art” is an art museum in Memphis that was founded in 1916. It is the oldest and largest art museum in the state of Tennessee, which was privately founded and is located in “Overton Park”. The original Beaux-Arts building was designed by James Gamble Rogers in 1913. The “Brooks Museum of Art” also includes the “Brooks Museum Store”, the “Brushmark Restaurant”, the “Holly Court Garden” and a large terrace with a view of the green areas of “Overton Park”. In 29 galleries, the art museum displays over 7,000 works of art, including paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, photographs and decorative arts. Particularly noteworthy is the Samuel H. Kress Collection with Renaissance and Baroque paintings.
Museum of Appalachia
The Museum of Appalachia is located in Norris, which is about 20 miles north of Knoxville. The open-air museum shows life in the early 20th century in the southern Appalachian region. The museum consists of a collection of more than 30 historical buildings that have been preserved and restored. It also displays authentic relics and one of the largest collections of folk art, and often hosts events featuring traditional Appalachian music (the music typical of the Appalachian region). The museum was founded in the 1960’s by John Rice Irwin, a businessman from Eastern Tennessee. In addition to the historic building, you can also see thousands of photographs and interesting artifacts. Many of the buildings are also listed on the National Register of Historic Places, such as the “Arnwine Cabin” which was built between 1795 and 1820. The “Appalachian Hall of Fame” is also part of the museum. Special personalities from this region as well as well-known representatives of Appalachian Music were included here.
Music Valley Wax Museum
The Music Valley Wax Museum is located in Nashville. It shows more than 50 stars of country music who were constructed from wax in authentic stage costumes and life-size. Another attraction of the museum is the “Sidewalk of the Stars” with more than 250 signed hand and footprints. Also on display are numerous artifacts and personal items belonging to famous country musicians.
THE BIGGEST CITIES OF TENNESSEE
In addition to the city of Nashville, which is also known as the capital of Tennessee, the US state of Tennessee has other interesting cities to offer. Memphis, Knoxville and Chattanooga are particularly worth seeing.
Memphis
The city of Memphis, founded in 1819, is located in the southwest of the state of Tennessee. It is the largest city in Tennessee with about 653,000 residents and an area of 763.4 km². The city borders the two states of Arkansas and Mississippi and is also on the east bank of the Mississippi River.
Memphis is considered the cradle of rock’n roll, the home of blues and an important place where soul developed. In addition to Elvis Presley, who lived in Memphis, other great musicians began their musical careers in the city.
But Memphis was not only famous musically. It also went down in history with a sad incident. In 1968 the civil rights activist Martin Luther King jr. shot.
TOURIST ATTRACTIONS
Particularly worth seeing is Beale Street as the center of the blues. The visits to Graceland, the former residence of Elvis Presley and the Sun Studios, where Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis were under contract, are also very interesting.
