Duke Homestead State Historic Site
The Duke Homestead State Historic Site is a national historic landmark located in Durham. The house, built in 1852, was originally owned by Washington Duke in the 19th century. After the civil war the family lived here and founded a tobacco plantation and in 1890 the “American Tobacco Company”, which at that time was the largest tobacco company in the world. Today the house with the plantation is a museum where visitors can see how the family lived in the 19th century. The rooms are furnished with original furnishings. You can also visit the tobacco barns and numerous other artifacts. The visitor center also has a small museum with exhibits on tobacco growing and the history of tobacco.
Grandfather Mountain
The “Grandfather Mountain”, also called “Calloway Peak”, is located near Linville and is part of the Blue Ridge Mountains. At 1,818 m, the “Grandfather Mountain” is the highest point in the east of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The Blue Ridge Parkway panoramic road also runs along this mountain. Great Smokey Mountains National Park
The “Great Smokey Mountains National Park” is located in the Appalachian Mountains and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The national park stretches as far as Tennessee and has existed since 1934. In addition, the park has one of the world’s oldest forests and the largest primeval forest in the eastern United States. Due to the strong fluctuations in altitude, the vegetation is very rich in species. There are five different forests with 130 tree species and 4,000 plant species. The fauna is just as diverse.
