Mammoth Cave National Park
Mammoth Cave National Park is located in central Kentucky. With more than 627 km it is the largest cave in the whole world. The “Mammoth Cave National Park” has existed since 1941 and has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a Biosphere Reserve. Archaeological finds show that the cave was inhabited 4,000 years ago. The huge saltpeter deposits were used to manufacture gunpowder during the war. The underground mammoth cave is covered by deciduous forests and a hilly karst landscape. The cave system, which consists largely of lime, was created primarily by slightly acidic rainwater that has acted here for thousands of years. The Rotundensaal is particularly worth seeing in the cave. Visitors can take guided cave tours through the National Park Service.
Masterson House
The “Masterson House” was built in 1790 and is the oldest two-story brick building that is located between Cincinnati and Louisville. The house overlooking the Ohio River was the first meeting place for the United Methodist Church in the area. Richard and Sarah Masterson, two of the first settlers, lived in the house. Also on the property is the Masterson Family Cemetery and a grove of trees that are historically related. Today the house is a historical museum that offers an insight into the life of the family and the time.
Mountain Homeplace
Mountain Homeplace is an open air museum in Paintsville Lake State Park in Staffordsville. The museum is a replica of a farming community from the mid-19th century. You can see a forge, a school house, a church, an old log cabin and a barn with farmland. The museum has existed since 1995 and has been attracting numerous visitors to this idyllic area every year since then. The newest attraction is “In the Pines Amphitheater” which regularly hosts entertaining events. Costumed employees also offer tours of the historic site.
National Quilt Museum
The National Quilt Museum is the world’s largest and most prestigious museum that exhibits quilts and fiber art. It was founded in 1991 and has been inspiring art lovers as well as those interested in culture ever since. The museum offers a glimpse into the history of the blanket making, which was “brought to life” in the 1970’s.
Old Kentucky Chocolades
In Lexington, “Old Kentucky Chocolades” makes the hearts of all those with a sweet tooth beat faster. The chocolaterie is known for its unique creations, which, how could it be otherwise, are refined with fine bourbon. Although the snack shop is neither a monument nor any other historical monument, “Old Kentucky Chocolades” is unique and therefore worth mentioning. The best sellers are sweets with names like “Old Kentucky Bourbon Truffles” or “Jim Beam Bourbon Pecan Cake”. Another specialty of the house are the “Bourbon Cherries”, “Bourbon Chocolades” and “Chocolate Thouroughbreds”. Stopping by is worthwhile and trying one or two sweets is warmly recommended.
