The Florida Keys

The Florida Keys are located just off the Florida coast in the Caribbean Sea.

They are about 200 kilometers in size, stretching westward in a chain-like manner from South Florida.

The islands made of corals are connected to the Overseas Highway, also known as the Highway of Dreams. This street starts in Miami and ends in Key West, the southernmost point in the United States. The highway offers a lot for the eye: you can see small towns, marinas, great bridge constructions and wonderful landscapes.

Since the archipelago consists of many narrow islands, they are exposed to the surf of the sea, but not completely defenseless, the coral reefs offer a certain protection. However, divers and ships threaten the complex ecosystem by polluting the water and damaging the corals. Since souvenir hunters looted the coral reefs in the past, the archipelago was placed under nature protection so as not to endanger the balance of nature.

The route : Miami is the first stop, then comes Key Biscayne, from there you can reach the Biscayne National Park, a nature reserve for plants and animals. Key Largo, the largest island, is the next stop. Here you have the alternative, instead of using the US1, to take a detour over the Card Sound Bridge ($ 1 fee for cars) to cross the foothills of the southern Everglades.

A railway line once ran from here to Key West. The construction of this railway line was an expensive undertaking, as many dams were piled up and many bridges were built. The line was then completed in 1912. The rail connection was closed in 1935 when a train with several hundred passengers derailed by a hurricane. Shortly afterwards the railway line was paved and in 1938 the Overseas Highway was opened.

Next, you drive through the islands of Plantation Key, Upper Matecumbe Key and Lower Matecumbe Key, where the city of Islamorada is located, where you can admire dolphin shows in the Theater of the Seas or explore wrecks on the ocean floor. The next stop is the Lower Keys, here the distances to the islands are slowly increasing and on both sides of the road you can see nothing but water. Long Key and Duck Key follow, then you reach Grassy Key, where the Dolphin Research Center is located, a research and protection center for marine mammals. Therapies with dolphins for sick children are also carried out here.

The journey continues over Vaca Key with the town of Marathon, which can have an airfield, over the Seven Mile Bridge, the greatest attraction of the journey. Then come Bahia Honda Key, Big Pine Key, Summerland Key and Big Coppitt Key. You finally reach Key West with its 25,000 residents. The old town, Duval Street, the house of the writer Ernest Hemingway on Whitehead Street and the southernmost point of the USA, Southemost Point are major tourist destinations. Here you are only 90 km from Cuba.
