Denver [ denvə], capital of the State of Colorado, USA, 1 609 m above sea level at the eastern foot of the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains, at the upper South Platte River, 693,100 residents; (1950: 416,000, 2000: 555,000), of which (2016) 54.1% white (excluding Hispanics) and 10.0% black. Denver had significant mining operations (first gold, then silver) from 1859–93, and Denver-based Newmont Mining now operates gold mines around the world. The city is a commercial, financial, administrative center with various federal authorities, a large mint (Denver Mint). There is also a wide range of industries (especially the manufacture of drilling equipment and the electronics industry). Denver is a center for winter sports; important traffic junction, international airport (completed in 1994, based on designs by the architects Fentress, Brandurn & Ass.; with 137 km ² one of the largest airports in the world).

Cityscape: In the city center is the Civic Center, a green area with fountains and monuments; to the west is the City & County Building in the classical style (1931–32), south of it is the Denver Art Museum (1971) by G. Ponti et al. (especially Indian and Far Eastern art). To the east of the Civic Center is the Colorado State Capitol (1887–95) and the Cheesman Memorial. Larimer Square in the northwest is the oldest square in Denver with restored houses from the civil war. The Brown Palace Hotel (1892) by F. E. Edbrooke is one of the buildings from the turn of the century. An early work by I. M. Peiis the Mile High Center, a high-rise office building built in 1956; The architects TAC (The Architects Collaborative) built Johns Mauville Headquarters in 1976, K. Roche & J. Dinkeloo in 1980 the Helen G. Bonfils Theater. In 1995 the central library (architect: M. Graves) was inaugurated; it has 22 other branches in the city. – The National Center for Atmospheric Research (1966) by I. M. Pei is also located near Denver.

History: Established in 1858 as a gold prospector camp (Saint Charles) and named in 1859 after James Denver (* 1817, † 1892), the governor of the territory (1859–61 Jefferson-, since 1861 Colorado territory), Denver became the capital of the state in 1881. Gold and silver mining led to rapid growth in the city.
