Geography
The hill country (up to 595 m above sea level) in the north, which is partly adjacent to the Great Lakes, belongs to the Canadian Shield, the south (between Lake Michigan and Mississippi) to the central lowland. With the exception of a part in the southwest (driftless area) that was not covered by the inland ice at the time, the Pleistocene glaciation resulted in the formation of terminal moraines with valuable sand and gravel, as well as the formation of over 9,000 lakes (the largest is the Winnebago lake). The continental climate is tempered by the Great Lakes in the north and east. Today, 42% of the state’s area is again covered by forests; before the overexploitation around 1900 it was over 85%; only individual areas in the south and west have always been free of forest as grass steppes, they are used for agriculture.
