After the coast was discovered by Spanish seafarers in the 16th century, the area of ‚Äč‚Äčtoday’s Washington, populated by various Indian tribes, was explored as part of the Oregon region from the 1770s onwards, mainly by sailors, fur traders and missionaries, and above all by Spain, Great Britain and the United Kingdom USA claimed. In 1846 it came into the possession of the USA. With the division of the Oregon Territory as a territory in 1853, expanded to include the area east of the Snake River in 1859 and reduced in size by the establishment of Idaho in 1863, Washington was admitted to the Union in 1889 as the 42nd state. After large groups of whites immigrated from the 1840s onwards, increased in the mid-1850s as a result of gold discoveries, there were repeated armed conflicts with the Indians until 1877. After Washington was better connected to the Union by the transcontinental railroad from 1887, increased settlement and an expansion of trade began, especially with the gold discoveries in the Yukon area and in Alaska at the end of the 1890s. The industrialization took place in the course of the First World War and the regulation of the Columbia River from 1933.
