Alex Haley House and Museum
Originally known as the Palmer House, the Alex Haley House and Museum is located in Henning. It was built between 1918 and 1919 for Will E. Palmer, who lived here with his wife Cynthia Palmer and grandson Alex Haley. Not only was the property the home of noted author Alex Haley for many years, it is also his final resting place. The “Haley House” was extensively restored and now serves as a historical house museum, which is now set up as it was during Haley’s lifetime. You can see artifacts from the family and memorabilia from Haley’s childhood. The Alex Haley House and Museum is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. American Museum of Science and Energy
The American Museum of Science and Energy is a science museum in Oak Ridge. The museum is suitable for all age groups and has extensive exhibitions on energy, especially nuclear energy. The museum originally opened in 1949 as the American Museum of Atomic Energy. It shows permanent as well as changing exhibitions, including robots and a demonstration project on solar energy.
Andrew Johnson National Historic Site
The Andrew Johnson National Historic Site is located in Greenville and comprises three separate units, including the Andrew Johnson Visitor Complex, the Andrew Johnson Homestead and the Andrew Johnson National Cemetery. The National Historic Site was built to honor Andrew Johnson, the 17th President who lived here. The National Historic Site includes the two houses of Johnson, his tailor shop and his tomb in the “Andrew Johnson National Cemetery”. A statue and a small museum also commemorate Lincoln’s successor. The Andrew Johnson National Historic Site has been designated a Historic District and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Art Museum of the University of Memphis
The Art Museum of the University of Memphis is located in Memphis and is often known by the acronym “AMUM”. The art museum was opened in 1981 as “The University Gallery” and was given its current name in 1994. Both admission and guided tours of the museum are free. You can see numerous permanent exhibitions. One of the most popular is the “Egyptian Collection” with antiques and archaeological artifacts. The AMUM’s collection of Egyptian antiques is the largest of its kind in the southern United States. Another is the “African Collection” with many interesting works of art and artifacts. There are also regularly changing exhibitions such as the “ArtLab” or “Caseworks”.
Knoxville
The city of Knoxville is located in eastern Tennessee on the Tennessee River. The city has around 187,000 residents on an area of 254.1 km² and is the third largest city in the state.
It’s a little older than Memphis as it was founded in 1791. It was also the capital of Tennessee from 1796 to 1817. The city owes its name to the former Secretary of War Henry Knox. In 1982 the world exhibition (Expo) took place in Knoxville, which made the city internationally known.
The city is the seat of the state University of Tennessee, which with about 28,000 students is the most important university of the Tennessee University Association.
The famous director Quentin Tarantino comes from Knoxville.
TOURIST ATTRACTIONS
Visitors can see the Sunsphere Tower here, which was the symbol of the 1982 World’s Fair. Knoxville is also a great base for touring the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
