Grand Village of the Natchez Indians
The Grand Village of the Natchez Indians, also known as the Fatherland Site, is located south of Natchez. The “Grand Village” shows a prehistoric Indian village with the typical mounds in the area. The village was the center for political and religious ceremonies for the Natchez Indians in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The village area is now a popular tourist attraction and shows numerous artefacts, including pottery, of the former residents in the museum. The village was designated a Mississippi Landmark and a National Historic Landmark and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Highland park
The “Highland Park” is a historical park in Meridian that has existed since 1909. In the park is the “Jimmie Rodgers Memorial Museum”, a museum that is fully dedicated to the “Father of Country Music”. You can see various musical instruments and equipment from the steam locomotive era. Furthermore, the “Highland Park Dentzel Carousel and Shelter Building” is located in the park. The “Highland Park” was declared a Mississippi Landmark and Historic District and included in the National Register of Historic Places.
Jackson Zoo
The “Jackson Zoo” is located in Jackson and opened in 1919. The zoo is located in historic Livingston Park and is the largest in the state of Mississippi. More than 200 species and 800 animals live in the Jackson Zoo. The individual zoo enclosures were divided into the respective habitats according to the species. So you have the opportunity to get to know the Mississippi wilderness, to visit a savannah or an African rainforest.
John Ford Home
John Ford Home, also known as Ford Stockade or Ford’s Fort, is near Sandy Hook in Marion County. The house was built in 1809 by one of the first settlers in the area, John Ford. As a unique example of the “Elevated frontier-style” the house was included in the National Register of Historic Places. The “John Ford Home” has been extensively restored and now shines back in its original splendor. Visits are only available by appointment with the Marion County Historical Society.
